Francis Baring, the founder of Barings Bank, purchased the Stratton estate from the heiress of the Earl of Southampton and her husband, the 6th Duke of Bedford, and proceeded to remodel the gardens and enclose the deer park.
Barings Bank bought back Stratton Park to use as the bank's headquarters during the war.
Francis John, Fifth Baron Northbrook bought back the Park from the Bank while the house and the immediate grounds and woods were bought by John Baring, Lord Ashburton, whose seat had been, until 1933 (and would be again from 1962), The Grange at Northington. The house was demolished in 1961 and replaced with the present one.
The Woodlands Estate was bought by the 4th Baron Northbrook. The estate is currently home to Francis Baring, 6th Baron Northbrook, and his family, forming part of Woodlands and Stratton Estates.
To this day, the park remains host to agricultural and sporting activities, and the family plays an active role in the local community, with its picturesque traditional village, thatched houses, flourishing church and village hall.
The beautiful undulating hills of Woodlands form an important part of the South Downs National Park, in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB).
